Signs of Spring: Dutchman’s Breeches

Dutchman's Breeches (photo by Diane Machesney)

These beautiful flowers are blooming now in western Pennsylvania.  They’re called Dutchmen’s breeches because they look like pairs of pants hung upside down on the stem.

  1. Wonderful continuing tale,Kate.Many thanks!
There is action at the Franklin Institute Science Museum in Philadelphia-but I haven’t had time to look this week!
The Dutchmen’s Breeches that we have in Eastern PA (Delaware County)are pink.I’ve never seen the white ones.
We have lots of Daffodils and Narcissus, cherry blossoms, purple violets, lots of Lesser celandine,Veronica, windflowers(I forget the species name)that I have never succeeded in growing.Various crocuses-large-in bloom,Japanese weeping cherry, the Magnolia soulangeana was hit by frost at the top of the trees.Usually magnolia stellata succumb to frost-these haven’t.Red maples blooming as well as many kinds of flowering crabs. My favorite threesome flowering plum trees got hit by high winds and heavy rains. They usually look like a mound of strawberry ice cream. Now they are wizened up maroon.
The Leopard frogs have stopped singing, and I saw one tiny damselfly on my way by the retention pond.
