Charlie Hickey found these ducks in Delaware last month.
Can you identify them with their bottoms up?

American Wigeon (Anas americana)?
Wood Ducks maybe?
Personally I would’ve named it “Duckus Moonicus” … 😉
My best guess is Northern Shoveler. (They had SO MANY of them at Bombay Hook when I visited over Thanksgiving break I couldn’t believe my own eyes.)
harlequin ducks?
American Black Duck?
This is going to sound odd, but Mallards, maybe?
And the answer is…
Josh is right.
Charlie saw the ducks with their heads up & identified them as Northern Shovelers.
I guessed Northern Shoveler based on the male’s botTom (front left), but the females (the two in the back) look enough like mallards that they could be. The real mystery is the front right bird. I wonder if that’s what an immature male looks like… ?
I don’t mean to gloat but . . . WOOHOO! Shovelers are my all-time favorite Duck. They’ve got big noses just like me 😉
