Fledge Watchers needed!
The three peregrine nestlings at the I-79 Neville Island Bridge are due to fledge in the next seven days. Laura Marshall and Anne Marie Bosnyak need your help observing at this site. If a fledgling lands in the river he must be rescued or he will drown.
Weather permitting, Laura will be watching at these dates and times if you wish to join her. Meet her under the Fairfield Inn sign on Neville Island.
- Wednesday June 5, 10:00-12:00.
- Thursday June 6, on and off 7:30-11:30.
- Friday, June 7, off and on all day on both sides of the river. Stop below the Fairfield Inn sign. If no one’s there, look for Laura with binoculars on the other side of the river and wave. She’ll come over and bring you around to Glenfield side where she has permission to stand.
- Saturday, June 8, 7:30-9:30am. If you can come at other times, please do!
- Sunday, June 9, after 12:00pm.
- Next week to be announced: Anne Marie will coordinate on Monday.

I have time this weekend that I’d love to spend fledge watching!
Downtown Peregrines – Just today at lunchtime (shortly before 2 P.M.) one of the juveniles from the downtown nest was at the very top of Lawrence Hall making such a racket, flapping like crazy, but going nowhere. Soon, either mom or dad came cruising in past the nest site and landed on top of The Carlyle. The youngster immediately flew the best he/she could over to The Carlyle at which point mom/dad promptly took off towards the river and soared as high as he/she could and left the baby squawking and probably hungry. I never did see mom/dad come back but spotted one of them soaring over the river once I was on Wood Street – with the baby still screaming in the background-apparently waiting for lunch takeout. They are truly amazing birds. It always surprise me when you are standing on the sidewalk looking up not one person stops to ask what you are looking for.
I took 2 of my children fishing today (6/8/13) on the Ohio River. While fishing along Nevile island side of the main river, under the I-79 bridge, we watched one of the fledgling falcons on the bridge piling. it was squawking and walking around. It looked healthy and well.
I most likely saw the same fledgling Mark did…I was watching from the port authority parking lot around 7:30pm. I was concerned that the young falcon was grounded and so close to the water…so concerned I called the game commission. They told me that they are ok there. I saw a parent fly to the scrape over head…did not see any other fledglings out and about.
At 11:00am Laura Marshall, Tricia McIntyre and I were on the Glenfield side watching the fledgling on the piling and the two other youngsters still near the nest. We saw Mark’s boat approach, heard the fledgling call and wondered if the adult peregrines would come and attack the people in the boat. Fortunately it all worked out for the best.

we live in moon twp. on a wooded slope across from the 79 bridge. today,july 1st, an adult peregrine and two (maybe 3) took up activity in our woods. they hunted and screeched all day. i watched them fight over a fresh kill of a small animal.it was an awesome show.
