Reminder: Gulf Fledge Watch This Weekend

Third peregrine chick about to take off, 6:30am May 30 (photo from the National Aviary falconcam at Gulf Tower)

Join us at Flag Plaza above Downtown Pittsburgh to watch the Gulf Tower peregrines fledge.  We’ve added an hour this evening because we know that 3 of them have already fledged.  (The one that’s flapping took off just after this snapshot!)

  • TODAY May 30, 7:00pm-8:00pm.
  • Saturday May 31, noon to 4:00pm
  • Sunday June 1, noon to 4:00pm.

  1. Looks like all the kids have flown the coop (so to speak). I haven’t seen any of the chicks on the snapshot camera for at least 2 hours. Hope their initiation to flight goes well.

  2. Once the chicks have fledged, will they return to the scrape at all? Or do their wandering days begin immediately upon fledging?

    Thank you!

    1. Suzanne, as soon as all of them fledge they don’t come back to the nest. The nest is “the babies’ crib” so as soon as there are no babies to feed there, all activity moves elsewhere. Within a week of fledging they are taught how to hunt. In as little as 6 weeks they leave Pittsburgh and start to wander.

  3. Thank you! So they DO stick around the area, but not IN the nest. That makes sense. I’m new to both falcon and bald eagle watch and it’s fun to learn about these wonderful birds!
