Violets In November

Just over a week ago Fran Bungert was walking in South Park with her husband and dogs when she came upon some violets in bloom and sent me this picture from her cellphone.

November is a very odd time for violets (Viola sororia sororia).  They normally bloom from April to June.

Are they confused by our warm El Niño autumn?  Or have some violets always bloomed in November and I’ve just not paid attention?

What do you think?

  1. I saw some last week while raking leaves. Never seen them before at this time
of year. I’m guessing it’s the warm El Nino autumn.

  2. Maybe the warm weather and light levels are similar to spring? My petunias and roses are still blooming. We haven’t had a killing frost in my neighborhood as yet. I’ve also noticed some magnolias trying to bloom!

  3. I noticed many violets blooming in my yard last week I never saw them bloom at this tme of year before.

  4. I just happened to notice violets this weekend still in my yard (Munhall). Plus, I have marigolds in bloom! I started seeing new growth in the dirt where I pulled a patch of dead marigolds in early October, but as I always do, I pull out the dried seeds and sprinkle them on the ground for next year (they always come back up, even after our frigid winter last year). However, I didn’t expect them to sprout now! They started sprouting right before Halloween and when we had our first frost I thought for sure they would die. But I have two in bloom right now! Oh, and my snapdragons have re-bloomed too. Very odd for Thanksgiving.
