Great Blue Heron Courtship

Let’s take a break from birds of prey. Here’s a story about another species.

Great blue herons (Ardea herodias) are returning to Pennsylvania and gathering at their rookeries to court and nest.

This video from Florida shows their elegant gestures and courtship rituals as they build their pair bond.

An added bonus on the video are the bird sounds in the background.  Listen and you’ll hear sandhill cranes, boat-tailed grackles and American coots.

  1. thank you… you can see them across the river at Mayview when you hike in and down. There are a few nests..

  2. There is a heron rookery along Chartiers Creek just north of Southpointe, near Hendersonville. If you kayak down there this month up thru early May (before the leaves come out), you round a bend in the creek, and suddenly there they are – about 35 large nests with big birds straddling 4 huge sycamore trees. Breathtaking. Looks like something out of Jurassic Park! I’ve taken photos, but nothing compares to the ahhhh experience!

  3. I used to live outside Cabot, PA … there was a very active rookery on Buffalo Creek, very visible from the Rails to Trails walking/bike path. Not sure if it is still active, especially since there has been increased fracking activity, however, it’s worth a day trip to check into!

    1. sheba50 and Zack, (change of previous message) there was a juvenile peregrine at Pitt but no fight on camera. Hope is incubating now.
