This morning I tuned into the Gulf Tower falconcam to watch the sunrise and — Surprise! — there was a peregrine falcon at the nest.  Soon there were two peregrines bowing on camera.

These two look like Dori and Louie and, no, they aren’t going to nest right now. They’re strengthening their pair bond.

Happy October!

  1. Thank you for sharing, Kate. It’s nice to see Gulf Tower attract our beautiful birds for a bonding session.

  2. Hi Kate. I was wondering if mating season was beginning. When I was at the Heinz refuge in Philly, a peregrine flew in circles overhead, making spurts of quick flapping and the an unusual call. The bird guides hadn’t seen it before. Is this likely to be a mating call?

    1. Trini, local peregrines who do not migrate are always territorial to some extent. During migration of arctic peregrines (October) & dispersal of young peregrines (since summer) those with territory let the other birds know who owns the place. It’s not mating behavior, just a warning.

  3. Hope and Terzo went through this same thing last month and I’m still seeing them alone there quite often. It would be so nice to have both of the pairs nesting in Pittsburgh again next year. Thank you for sharing Dori and Louie back at the Gulf. Very exciting.
