Sometimes soggy ground is too weak to hold a mature tree.

On Friday January 12 it rained 2 inches in 24 hours in Pittsburgh.  Then it got very cold.

This red oak was rooted in a hillside in Panther Hollow but it began to lean after so much rain.  By January 16 it blocked the Upper Trail in Schenley Park.  The Park Ranger vehicle can’t come through.

Alas, it just fell over.

  1. I live in Central Florida. Normally, we have a lot of Robins this time of year. Haven’t seen any so far this year. Where are they?

    1. Donna, According to eBird there are robins in Central Florida right now but not as many as last year. It appears they haven’t moved as far south as they did in 2016-2017. There are lots of robins now in Mississippi, Alabama, Tennessee, and coastal North and South Carolina

  2. I saw a robin last week at my heated birdbath (aka “the waterhole”) in southwestern Pennsylvania. I wondered what the poor thing was finding to eat. Snow and bitter cold.
