Blackbird singing in the dead of night

Take these broken wings and learn to fly

All your life

You were only waiting for this moment to arise

— 1st stanza from Blackbird by The Beatles

The Beatles’ Blackbird song, recorded in June 1968, always left me with more questions than answers.

  • What is the song about?
  • Who is the blackbird?
  • How could the bird be singing at night when North American blackbirds don’t do that?

At the end of The Beatles recording you can here a blackbird singing. Listen below.

Find out who the blackbird is and what inspired the song at this vintage blog: Blackbird Singing in the Dead of Night?

    1. Dan Tush, yes it is. The Throw Back Thursday link at the bottom of this article (here) explains what the song is about.

  1. Thanks,Kate, for sharing this insight to a great song. Never really thought about it’s meaning. So appropriate during these times. Still, I don’t hear any birds singing after nightfall.
On another note, one of my favorite songs growing up was “Mocking Bird Hill”, although no bird sounds were included in the recording.
