Yesterday on Ellsworth Avenue my husband was surprised to see a curious fawn inside the Hunt Mansion fence. The fawn began to approach him. Where was its mother?
Not far away. After a few steps the fawn paused and went to mom nearby. Its mother taught it that humans on the sidewalk are not dangerous, but don’t get too close.
The doe must have indicated she was going outside the fence. “I’m going to eat that hedge. Go to your hiding place while I’m gone.”
The doe crossed the street to the yard with the delicious hedge and the fawn trotted away.
So this doe I saw last week has a fawn.

Yesterday my husband was driving on Denniston toward the intersection with Northumberland at 2:15 pm. The traffic was completely stopped at the intersection and on both streets as a doe and two fawns walked down the center of Northumberland toward Beechwood Blvd.
My hope is that the new mayoral administration is going to continue the managed culling of the city’s deer herd. Do you know if they are?
I’ve lived in Pittsburgh since 1982, and it’s only within the past 5 – 6 years that I’ve seen this explosion of deer in the residential community. From a health and safety perspective for both humans and wildlife, this is an untenable situation.
Lucinda, the City Parks deer hunt is continuing in 2026-27. The Engage Pittsburgh website is already accepting applications from bow hunters for this fall’s hunt.
