Two Chicks, Two Eggs, Keep Watching

Yesterday two of Carla and Ecco’s four eggs hatched: one at 11:02am, the second at 15:28 (3:38pm). The evidence each time was the half eggshell that Carla pulled out from under her. She ate most of the shells immediately.

This morning the chicks ate just before sunrise, then slept in a heap (at top) while Carla took out the garbage. This slideshow highlights their first day of life including this morning’s feeding.

Today will be a big day for Chick#3 whose egg has a large pip. He will probably hatch today.

Keep watching the National Aviary falconcam at Univ of Pittsburgh.

  1. Geez, I’ve missed a couple of days with a broken computer. Back online today and find this wonderful update, what a happy way to start the day! Talons crossed that all four eggs hatch.

  2. Unless the pieces of the egg shell I’m seeing is from yesterday’s hatching of the 2nd egg I think the third egg hatched sometime after this mornings feeding. I can’t say for sure because she is laying over the chicks & eggs because of the wind so I can occasionally hear the chicks but can’t see them. Watching the website at 10:40 AM Tuesday morning.

  3. False alarm she just got off the eggs because Ecco must be nearby & there is still only 2 chicks. The eggshell must be some of the shell from the 2nd hatching

    1. The hole in the back wall of the nestbox has been there for years. It was plugged on the back side 2-3 years ago with something dark brown so you’re seeing the ‘plug.’

  4. The third egg is partially open & I was able to see movement from the egg so hopefully sometime tonight the third chick will hatch.

  5. Don’t know when it happened, but there is a third hatchling. Carla is nibbling on the eggshell. I hope the newest addition to the family is OK!

  6. Third egg has hatched but I’m not sure what time. I just looked at the website at 7:50 PM & it is laying on it’s side in part of the egg but neither adult is in the nest right now
